About Me

My name is Rachel Gulden and I am a Respiratory Therapist. I worked for 7 years in the Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive care units at Providence Sacred Heart Children's hospital in Spokane. I've gone on  several medical missions to Kenya and Iraq, and am currently volunteering in Kenya long-term.

How I got started with Open Arms International:

In 2009 I volunteered on a 2 week medical mission trip in Kenya with Open Arms International. We hosted a free medical clinic in Kambi Teso slum. It was an amazing experience and I traveled with them again in 2010 for another 2 week trip. In May of 2011, I left my job and have since been serving in Kenya full-time.

About Open Arms:

Open Arms International built a Children's Home just outside Eldoret, Kenya that is home to over 85 children. They also run a school, a church, a feeding program in Kambi Teso slum, and a street kid outreach program. In the summers they host short-term teams from the US and the UK and put on free medical clinics in the Village community and two slum areas in Eldoret.

What I do:

My work at Open Arms includes providing basic medical care and healthcare education to the children and staff at the village, running the pharmacy, and keeping medical records. I also help organize and run the medical clinics and host summer teams. As a volunteer I am responsible for fundraising to cover all of my expenses (rent, food, travel, visas, a Kenya work permit, health insurance, etc.)

How you can help:
